In 2024, the prices of green coffee beans increased by up to 70%, and experts predict a further increase of around 30% in 2025. This situation is putting café and roasters in difficulty, as they have not yet fully passed on these increases to their customers. Thus, an increase in the price of a cup of coffee is to be expected in the coming months.

Jacques Mossong, barista at the Biz Café in Dudelange, roasts his own coffee by sourcing beans from various parts of the world, including South America and Southeast Asia. He notes a 50 to 70 percent increase in the price of green coffee beans, in addition to increases in energy, transport and packaging costs. While it applies small price increases of 5-10% for its customers, it can't pass on all of these increases without risking them switching to cheaper options.

In December 2024, the price of Arabica beans on the New York Stock Exchange reached a level not seen since 1977, mainly due to climatic fluctuations. Major exporting countries such as Brazil and Vietnam have suffered crop losses due to drought and flooding.

The roasting house Mondo del Caffè in Echternach, which works directly with the growers, is also affected by these price increases. Alfons Schrammer points out that some varieties of beans, once bought at 8 euros per kilo, now cost between 13 and 15 euros, making it difficult to keep them in the catalogue without significantly increasing prices for consumers.

As a result, it is likely that the choice of certain coffee specialties will decrease and that the prices of finished products will increase significantly in the near future.
